Welcoming in church can be as simple as a cheerful “hello” or as complex as comforting someone in pain. Both can be effective, but it really depends on the needs of the visitor, and the empathy and sensitivity of the welcomer. It doesn’t always come easily - especially when we have the opportunity to welcome people living with physical or cognitive differences. When it comes to difference, humans are hard-wired toward protecting their own interests, it’s a survival thing. The Christian message though blows that wide open, and embraces openness, compassion and generosity. Here are some great tips for authentically welcoming people with different abilities.
